Prosodic phrasing and F0 in Singapore English
نویسندگان
چکیده
A number of studies have investigated the phonetic properties of intonation patterns in Singapore English (SE). Additionally, it has been proposed that SE intonation is structured by a level of phonological phrasing above the word called the Accentual Phrase (AP), which encompasses a content word and preceding function words. This study investigates experimentally whether there are any durational correlates of AP boundaries and explores their possible relationship to established F0 patterns. In addition, the sensitivity of F0 movements to lexical stress within an AP is examined. Our findings show that word-final syllables at an AP boundary are marked by longer vowel durations than those in a phrase-medial word, and that this difference corresponds closely with known F0 correlates. Finally, within an AP, stress in a word-initial syllable results in an overall raising of F0 across the entire phrase, although the actual slopes of the contours do not differ.

Modelling the Interplay of Multiple Cues in Prosodic Focus Marking
Focus marking is an important function of prosody in many languages. While many phonological accounts concentrate on fundamental frequency (F0), studies have established several additional cues to information structure. However, the relationship between these cues is rarely investigated. We simultaneously analyzed five prosodic cues to focus—F0 range, word duration, intensity, voice quality, th...
متن کاملThe Focus-Independent Effect of Tonal Proximity on the Realization of Lexical Pitch Accent in Tokyo Japanese and Bermeo Basque
Tokyo Japanese (TJ) and the Northern Bizkaian dialects of Basque (NBB) are known to have similar pitch accent systems, and in both languages the focus status of words affects the prosodic phrasing. A cross-linguistic experiment was conducted to investigate whether the effect of tonal proximity on the phonetic realization of lexical pitch accent is conditioned by focus-related prosodic phrasing ...
متن کاملThe Role of Pitch Range Reset in Korean Sentence Processing
This study investigates the effect of pitch range reset in Korean listeners’ processing of syntactically ambiguous participle structures. Unlike Japanese and English,in Korean, the downtrend or the reset of pitch range does not consistently differentiate Accentual Phrases (AP), a lower level of phrasing, from Intonational Phrases (IP), a higher level of phrasing. Therefore, we explore Korean li...
متن کاملProduction of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners
This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...
متن کاملAdaptation of focus to lexical tone and phrasing in Kammu
Recently it has been proposed to base intonational typology on the way languages convey focus (pragmatic prominence). Generally, languages can enhance, add or delete phrase boundary tones (phrase languages) or add an extra pitch accent (intonation languages) to mark focus. Tone languages are somewhat problematic for this typology as it is difficult to make direct observations on their sentence ...
